Sarah Dawson has accumulated a list of accomplishments that could stand with equine professionals twice her age. In her short career, Sarah has earned two NRCHA World Championships, was the 2015 Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open Champion, along with being a finalist in every NRCHA premiere event. Although the cow horses are the “bread and butter” of Sarah and Chris’s business, she also has experience training and showing in the English discipline of Three-Day Eventing.
Some could say that horses are in her blood, as Sarah is the daughter of horseman and clinician Richard Winters. From an early age she had the opportunity to work with a myriad of different horses. Taking the invaluable knowledge of horse psychology that her father instilled in her, Sarah left home when she graduated high school at 16 to seek opportunities to learn from other equine professionals.
While focusing on the Reined Cow Horses, Sarah spent time with names such as Jon Roeser, Sandy Collier, Doug Williamson, Carol Rose and Bill Smith. During this time Sarah had the opportunity to develop her showmanship skills, while honing her colt starting skills. Sarah’s solid reputation for her quality work with colts enabled her to secure “colt starting contracts”, where she would go to a facility for two to six weeks at a time and start their colts.
Sarah’s passion lies in the training and showing of horses. “It is so rewarding for me to see a horse progress from a green two-year-old, to stepping onto the big stage at the Snaffle Bit Futurity 18 months later. It involves so much to get these horses trained, but I strongly believe what they learn first, they learn best, so getting a solid foundation on my young horses is very important to me.”
Sarah, along with her husband Chris currently operate Dawson Performance Horses in Aubrey, Texas. Their main focus is the training and showing of Reined Cow Horses.
