Larry Mahan, Celebrity Host - 2008

Often referred to as “The Great American Cowboy,” Larry Mahan has been a professional horseman for more than four decades. He is a six-time winner of rodeo’s prestigious World Championship All-Around Cowboy title, competing in bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding from 1963 until his retirement in 1977. Mahan’s extreme talent and affable personality made him a media favorite during his rodeo career. Most notably, he graced the pages of Sports Illustrated in 1968 and, in 1973, he starred in the Academy Award®-winning documentary, “The Great American Cowboy”. The popular champion would later parlay his professional reputation into several successful business ventures, including the Larry Mahan Boot Collection, a clothing line and the Milano Hat Company’s Larry Mahan’s® Hat Collection. These days, Mahan concentrates on his hosting duties for RFD-TV’s Equestrian Nation and on assisting his wife, Diana McNab, with her clinics and courses that feature ways to achieve whole body and mind health for both people and horses. Additionally, Mahan is currently working on a book about his life titled They Call Me Bull—a reference to his rodeo nickname—with the help of son Ty. The Mahans own approximately 100 head of horses on their ranches in Sunset, Texas, and Guffey, Colorado. The horses raised on the Mahan ranches are started in such sports as cutting and roping, with their training overseen by Mahan himself. This year marks the celebrated cowboy’s second stint in the Road to the Horse announcer’s booth (first time in 2005). It is an assignment that he says he gladly accepted upon invitation from Road to the Horse producer and old friend Tootie Bland. “I think Road to the Horse is the most amazing concept that anyone has ever dreamed up and put together for people that love horses,” said Mahan. “[Founders] Steven and Tootie Bland have created something that has given so many people an inside look at the training processes of these wonderful horseman.

“And the great thing about that is that people are going to take what they see home with them, and it is going to make a lot of horses’ lives better.” For more information about Larry Mahan, visit www.larrymahan.com
